Enjoy your weekend at Scum Bucket Beach.
The National Resources Defense Council ranked Connecticut 26th of 30 states for the quality of water off its beaches, the worst of any Eastern Seaboard state.
Delaware and New Hampshire had the best results in the nation, followed by North Carolina, New Jersey and Florida. Louisiana ranked last.
NRDC reported that beach closing and water advisory days last year dropped 3 percent nationally from 2010, but 2011 still was the third-worst year in the 22-year history of its report.
More than two-thirds of closings and advisories were issued because bacteria levels in beach water exceeded public health standards, indicating the presence of human or animal waste in the water. The largest known source of pollution was storm-water runoff.
