Hear ye, hear ye!
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the consolidation of Norwalk, Council President Douglas Hempstead will convene a special meeting of the city of Norwalk Common Council at the Historic Town House on Mill Hill.
The meeting is slated for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, precisely 100 years from the first meeting of the consolidated Common Council. That first council presided over the combination of the then-towns of Norwalk with South Norwalk and East Norwalk.
The original minutes from the Oct. 8, 1913 meeting will be dusted off and read by members of the present day Common Council.
The historic Town House was built in 1835. It served as a gathering place for Norwalk citizens conducting religious and political business as well as a meeting spot for the administration of civic duties.
Said Hempstead, “By observing this historic moment today”™s Common Council celebrates the contributions of our forbearers and, really, every citizens that has volunteered to serve the city of Norwalk over the past 100 years. The citizens of Norwalk knew then that regional cooperation, political teamwork and mutual support would improve the strength and quality of our city. It continues to serve as a good example of city government.”
The Special Meeting will precede the regular Common Council meeting, which begins 8 p.m. in the council chambers at Norwalk City Hall.
