After 65 years in Bridgeport, Modern Plastics is moving its headquarters to Shelton.
The company sells plastics for use in medical devices and other engineering applications.
Modern Plastics is currently located at 678 Howard Ave. Its new Shelton facility at 88 Longhill Cross Road will include a quarantined room for storage of medical plastics; 18,000 square feet of space for manufacturing; a retail store for items such as custom-size Plexiglas; and a small office.
“We are saddened to leave Bridgeport after so many years, but we are also thrilled and excited about the move to Shelton,” said Bing Carbone, president of Modern Plastics, in a statement. “The need for efficient manufacturing space, larger offices for our core business plus a retail store to serve the local market has become essential to meet the growing requirements of our customers.”
Health Net cuts 750
Health Net Inc. filed formal notice of plans to cut 750 jobs in Shelton, after completing the sale of its Northeast business to UnitedHealth Group Inc.
It is the largest mass layoff revealed in Fairfield County this year. In Connecticut, only Shaw”™s Supermarkets and the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics Corp. have filed notice of larger mass layoffs with the state Department of Labor; though United Technologies Corp. attempted to do so before a judge ruled it would violate a union contract.
Mattingly gets funds
Mattingly Sports Inc. raised $3.5 million in funding, as the Shelton-based company sells sports paraphernalia endorsed by Los Angeles Dodgers manager and former New York Yankee Don Mattingly.
The company sells bats, pitching machines, gloves and instruction books.
Ex-Pratt-Read workers get boost
The U.S. Employment Training Administration certified former workers of Pratt-Read Corp. in Shelton to receive additional jobless benefits, after they were laid off.
With a history dating to 1798, Pratt-Read manufactured screwdrivers and other tools. After the company declared bankruptcy in 2009, it was acquired by Ideal Industries Inc.
Under Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits, Pratt-Read alumni will be eligible for job search and relocation allowances; tax credits covering 80 percent of their health insurance premiums; and job training.
