The median CEO’s compensation totaled just over $360,000, according to a survey by Chief Executive Group L.L.C., debunking what the company says is a myth that most CEOs enjoy excessive pay packages.
Greenwich-based Chief Executive Group publishes Chief Executive magazine.
Chief Executive Group surveyed executives from more than 1,100 companies. It says its figure more accurately reflects the actual pay of CEOs or owners of the approximately 30 million businesses in the United States, compared to a $9.6 million figure it says many media outlets use based on compensation at publicly traded companies.
In 2011, the median CEO’s compensation was up 1.9 percent from the year before, Chief Executive Group stated, less than the rate of inflation.
