Marriott International’s plans to acquire Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide have hit a roadblock, as owners of two Starwood-owned hotels have filed a suit in New York State Supreme Court to block the $12.9 billion deal.
Dream Team Hotel Associates, which owns the Westin Times Square hotel, and Cityfront Hotel Associates Limited Partners, which owns the Sheraton Grand Chicago, are maintaining the deal would violate contract provisions regarding how close Starwood-operated hotels can operate near other hotels it owns. Headquartered in Stamford, Starwood”™s properties include the Westin, Sheraton, St. Regis, and W Hotel brands.
If approved, the Marriott acquisition would make it the world”™s largest hotel company with roughly 30 hotel brands. In addition to the Marriott name, the company”™s 4,000-plus hotels include the Ritz-Carlton, Bulgari, Protea and Moxy names.
