Of residents age 64 and under in both Fairfield County and Connecticut, 89 percent had health insurance as of 2007, according to new estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Middlesex County led the state with a coverage rate exceeding 90 percent.
After passing a law in 2006 requiring health insurance for most citizens, Massachusetts led the nation the following year with a 92 percent coverage rate. Hawaii, Minnesota and Wisconsin were the only other states to top the 90 percent mark.
In both neighboring Westchester County and in New York state, 85 percent of inhabitants have insurance, with Monroe County encompassing the Rochester area leading the Empire State with 89 percent coverage.
Texas and New Mexico had just 73 percent of residents with insurance.
