Connecticut sustained more than $7 million in damage from the nor”™easter that struck in mid-March, most of it in Fairfield County, according to initial estimates by the state.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell requested that officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency conduct their own assessment, a needed step for the county to qualify for federal disaster assistance.
Under federal rules, Fairfield County would have to have suffered at least $2.8 million in damage to qualify for federal aid.
The Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security has been collecting damage information on homes and businesses, to determine if companies will qualify for low-interest Small Business Administration loans.
“This storm was among the most destructive to ever hit Fairfield County and the damage is simply astounding,” Rell said, in a prepared statement. “The storm uprooted trees, took down utility poles and left thousands of residents without power for days. State and municipal crews worked countless hours to clear the roads.”
