Online retail sales increased 17.4 percent on Thanksgiving and 20.7 percent on Black Friday compared with last year’s Thanksgiving weekend sales, according to IBM Corp.
Data generated by Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM indicated that the rise in online sales was largely the result of an increase in mobile purchases.
Nearly a quarter of Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday online shoppers used a mobile device to visit a retailer’s website, up from 14.3 percent a year ago, according to IBM.
Mobile sales comprised more than 16 percent of all online sales for those two days, up from 9.8 percent in 2011, IBM reported.
