John Milne, the former president and chief financial officer of United Rentals Inc., was sentenced to more than two years in prison after pleading guilty last October to conspiring to falsify the books of the Greenwich-based company.
U.S. District Judge Ellen Bree Burns also ordered the Westport resident to perform 200 hours of community service. To resolve a separate action with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Milne will pay $6.3 million.
Prosecutors say Milne, 50, led a conspiracy in 2003 to falsify United Rentals”™ records to hide the true nature of payments made to Westport-based Terex Corp., in settlement of obligations incurred as a result of minor sale lease-back transactions.
After leaving United Rentals, Milne had bought a controlling stake in the Pittsburgh-based Iron City Brewing Co.
