For the past 30 years, David Sussan has been successful in the film industry producing, directing and running his own production company, the Sussan Group. Tired of the constant travel and being away from his family, coupled with a past love for medicine, Sussan turned to the business of elder care and became the owner of the new Right at Home in Stamford.
Sussan, once studied bioscience in Italy and taught biology in New Jersey. Sussan had to choose once between medical school and a competing interest of production. Now after three decades, he is happy to be working locally, giving back to his community in another field that he finds important.
“I think David”™s a great choice, he”™s coming from a very different kind of business and he was ready for something different.” said Allen Hager, CEO of Right at Home.
“People are much more concerned about the service on a personal level and I like that,” said Sussan. “I started out looking at eight organizations and I really liked the people at Right at Home. Even though you”™re dealing with the right people, it”™s not a slam-dunk. You have to give 110 percent all the time.”
Right at Home is an in-home supportive service that provides a compromise for families by allowing seniors in relatively good health to continue to live in their own homes independently with assistance for certain daily tasks. Currently, four Right at Home franchises operate in the state including Sussan”™s Stamford location. The company plans to add six additional offices in the next year.
According to a new census report, the number of seniors in America is expected to double to 70 million in the next 25 years as more baby boomers retire. This will leave an increasing number of adult children of aging parents faced with the challenge of choosing between inviting their parents to move into their homes or moving the parents to nursing homes. Right at Home expects to be a valued service for its ability to find a middle ground.
“We”™re thrilled to be in Stamford,” said Hager. “We”™ve had great success with the northern office we”™ve setup, up in the Hartford area and we have really been wanting to expand to the rest of the state. The Stamford area is a very affluent community that has the kind of thing we”™re looking for, with the availability of care givers as well as the kind of community that needs the care. They have a bit of everything.”
