Members of the Connecticut affiliate of American Federation of Teachers representing teachers in New Haven Public Schools are teaming up Tuesday, March 4 with parents, caregivers, union members, students, and neighbors to fight for federal education funding.
The event is part of a coordinated action being organized by that national teachers union to strengthen traditional neighborhood schools and the services for children and families. The purpose is to urge federal representatives to resist tax cuts for the ultra-rich and oppose slashing education funding block grants.
According to Fran Rabinowitz, executive director of the Connecticut Association of School Superintendents, there are more than 175 events nationwide planned on Tuesday.
“On March 4, CEA (Connecticut Education Association) and AFT are sponsoring a full day,” Rabinowitz said. “We are all wearing red. We have press conferences at the state capitol.”
In New Haven, the day of action will include a march that starts outside Gateway Community College at 3:45 p.m. The march will go to the New Haven Green at 4:30 p.m. with additional speakers at 5 p.m.
