With the sequester  set to go into effect by the end of the day, President Barack Obama has called top congressional leaders to the White House to discuss additional ways to avoid the roughly $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts, according to news reports.
The meeting is unlikely to make serious progress, according to the New York Times. However, it’s the first meeting since the beginning of the year that the president, Speaker John A. Boehner, Sen. Harry Reid,  Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Mitch McConnell have met to discuss their differences.
Connecticut stands to lose roughly $50 million in funding for health, education, children and military readiness, if the sequester goes through, according to White House reports.
Critics say the effects of the sequester are unlikely to be felt immediately.
