The Connecticut Insurance Department trimmed Aetna Inc.’s request for a 12 percent premium increase on a health plan provided to AARP members in Connecticut, awarding a 4 percent increase instead.
Aetna’s plan covers 1,200 AARP members here, with the new rate kicking in Jan. 1, 2013. The Hartford-based carrier sought the higher rate to cover medical costs, but the insurance department said Aetna overestimated large claims.
It is the first time Aetna has filed rates for that particular plan in Connecticut, previously doing so in Washington, D.C. where AARP is based.
