Bridgeport has the highest taxes of any U.S. city in 2011, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch blog.
In 2011, families earning $25,000 annually paid $3,708 in taxes, the fifth highest in the country, according to the report. Families earning $150,000 paid $23,501 in taxes, the highest amount recorded.
The ranking is based off U.S. Office of Revenue Analysis estimates for property, sales, auto and income taxes paid in each state”™s largest city.
Mayor Bill Finch has reportedly defended the tax rates to the Connecticut Post, saying the average resident pays $6,431 a year and is “of modest means,” according to the report. The median household income is roughly $35,000, which is $15,000 below the national median.
Nearby, New York City also made the list and ranked as the seventh highest. Families earning $25,000 paid $3,273 in 2011 taxes and families earning $150,000 paid $18,811.
