Aquarion Water Co. announced Sept. 4 it completed the purchase of United Water Connecticut Inc. for $38.5 million, after the transaction was approved by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.
United Water Connecticut, a unit of Harrington Park, N.J.-based United Water, serves more than 21,000 customers in the towns of Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, New Milford and Woodbury.
United Water, which provides water and wastewater services to roughly 5.7 million people across the U.S., will continue to operate in Connecticut through public-private partnerships with the municipalities of Killingly, Newtown, Ridgefield, Sharon, Stonington and Weston, the company said.
With the acquisition, Bridgeport-based Aquarion will provide water service to more than 625,000 people in 47 cities and towns across the state, in addition to its service territories in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Aquarion, which is among the largest investor-owned water utilities in New England, has purchased and integrated 56 Connecticut water systems into its portfolio since 2011.
