DefenCall Inc. has unveiled a smartphone app that serves as a digital panic button and streamlines communications for staff during emergencies.
DefenCall, based in New Canaan, Conn., developed the personal duress app, which allows workers and volunteers to call for help in urgent situations by notifying both emergency services and administrative staff. The technology, which integrates emergency calling, text messaging, emailing and dispatching systems, provides immediate access to users in case of an emergency.
With the need to protect workers, volunteers, patients and visitors, the challenge for health care facility safety leaders is to provide “effective and affordable means to greater security,” said James C. Ackerly, CEO of DefenCall, in a written statement.
So far, 20 hospitals in the U.S., including several in Fairfield County and New York state are evaluating the smartphone app and considering adopting the technology system. Deals are in progress, said Michael Forbes, DefenCall chief marketing officer. But he said he can”™t disclose any names of the hospitals for confidentiality reasons.
“There are at least three hospital locations near the Westchester area,” Forbes said. These hospitals, which are located in Dutchess, Putnam and Monroe counties, are evaluating the technology, too.
