Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Haven has begun a state health index that Connecticut will utilize to track, improve and incorporate public-health data to recognize and help address major health issues in the state.
Anthem is working with a number of groups to research the reasons behind health deficiencies and to design policy solutions and implement or enhance programs aimed at improving overall health in the state.
“As the largest health insurer in the state, we have a unique responsibility to understand and improve not only the health of our members, but also the overall health of the communities in which they live,” said David R. Fusco, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Â “The state health index will provide Anthem and our public and private partners ”” state and local government, insurers, health-care professionals and consumers ”” with a roadmap to guide our work to improve the overall health of our state.”
Anthem has categorized a group of specific programs to focus on and improve in the next several years. Among these programs are the rates o, prenatal care in first trimester, low birth-weight in infants, adult influenza immunization, adult pneumococcal immunization, cigarette smoking, diabetes in adult population and heart disease death and physical activity levels.
