The State Bond Commission approved last week $170 million in funding for transportation projects around the state.
For Stamford,  about $40 million was approved to upgrade the Stamford Transportation Center, including the replacement of the adjacent parking garage. Currently there are proposals to build a multi-purpose residential building with ground-floor retail space in place of the garage.
The Stamford project is expected to improve traffic and pedestrian flow and promote transit-oriented development, according to the commission. About$50 million was also designated to replace the Metro-North Rail Bridge over Atlantic Street, which was built in 1896.
To replace roughly 210 miles of road around the state, the commission also approved about $57 million for resurfacing and an additional $14 million to preserve Interstate 395 in Lisbon, Montville and Norwich.
Additionally, the commission approved $9 million be added to the Fixing Freight First program, in which rail companies can apply for funds to repair and modernize rail, rail beds, crossings, culverts and related facilities.
