A Brookfield startup has raised $10 million in initial funding from Oak Hill Venture Partners, as it develops systems to improve the energy efficiency of data centers by 40 percent.
Founded in 2002 on $4 million in seed capital, Validus DC Systems is working to commercialize technology originally developed by the former head of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Validus”™ devices would convert alternating current-based electricity to direct current, a process that occurs inside machines today or via individual, external converters. The company says it is more efficient to perform AC-DC conversion in a separate device, then feed voltage to machines.
Validus has been working with Fremont, Calif.-based Rackable Systems Inc., which sells computer servers powered by direct current (DC) as opposed to the more traditional alternating current, which the companies say is less efficient.
