One of the ways in which war affects a people is the destruction of their artworks. But nothing that is remembered and cherished is ever lost.
Recently, Rago presented “Unbreakable Ukraine,” a selection of contemporary glasswork from Ukrainian artists in its Jan. 20 “Modern Design” auction. The collection of 13 lots was organized by Jeff Hillam, an American entrepreneur and collector who visited Ukraine with his wife and three children last September. The auction aimed to bring awareness and support to the Glass Museum”™s hot shop, which is shared by the Lviv National Academy of Arts, and the artists in their efforts to create and thrive in spite of war.
On Feb. 7, Thames & Hudson will publish “In the Eye of the Storm: Modernism in Ukraine, 1900-1930s.” This richly illustrated volume presents the astonishingly creative art produced in Ukraine in the early 20th century, focusing on the three key cultural centers of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. Against a complex sociopolitical backdrop of collapsing empires, World War I, the Russian Revolution of 1917 with the ensuing Ukrainian War of Independence and the eventual creation of Soviet Ukraine, several strands of distinctively Ukrainian art emerged across a variety of media ”“ from oil paintings, sketches and sculpture to collages, cinema posters and theater designs.
