Saturday, Nov. 11, marks Veterans’ Day, a big day for retail sales and parades but especially a time to recognize those who have dedicated their lives to the defense of our country, often making the ultimate sacrifice.
This year, military tribute banners for the village of Ardsley’s 14 fallen World War II sons are on display throughout November. Their names are engraved on Ardsley’s Wall of Honor in Pascone Park, but until now the Ardsley community has officially honored the sacrifices of these Ardsley High School graduates only during Memorial Day ceremonies. When Ardsley launched its military tribute banners initiative a year ago, the 14 were not represented, because none of their surviving family members and friends could be located.
But thanks to Ardsley American Legion Post 458 and Ardsley Fire Engine #1, which each sponsored six banners, and a local businessman – Maurice Hyacinthe, who sponsored two banners – all 14 are among the 105 in this year’s expanded display,
In Watertown, Connecticut, Packaging and Crating Technologies LLC (PACT) is partnering with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) there. Throughout the month of November, the family-owned, moving container manufacturer will donate 1% of sales proceeds from its entire product line to the nonprofit, whose purpose is to speed rehabilitation of the nation’s disabled combat veterans, assist their families and provide education and community service.
“We have strong ties to the military as it’s a key business sector that uses our shipping and packaging containers when individual soldiers are moved from station to station,” said Rodger Mort, president of PACT. “It is our privilege to give back to the heroes and their families who have given our country so much by fundraising for America’s largest organization of combat veterans.”
To our veterans, we at Westfair say, thank you for your service and sacrifice. We love you. And we will never forget you.
Happy Veterans’ Day.
