Fresh from her appearance in “The Woman King,” for which she wrote a song that she performed at the Gershwin Prize ceremony honoring Joni Mitchell in Washington, D.C., in February, five-time Grammy Award winner Angelique Kidjo brings her global music to The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College Saturday, April 15.
Among the highlights of Beninese-French singer”™s catalog are her tribute to Cuban singer Celia Cruz, “Celia,” her reimagining of the Talking Heads”™ album “Remain in Light” and her most recent release, “Mother Nature.””¯”¯
Kidjo also travels the world advocating on behalf of children in her capacity as a UNICEF and OXFAM goodwill ambassador. At the G7 Summit in 2019, French President Emmanuel Macron named Kidjo as the spokesperson for the AFAWA (Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa) initiative to help close the financing gap for women entrepreneurs in Africa. She has also created her own charitable foundation, Batonga, dedicated to supporting the education of young girls in Africa.
