Amid the picnics and parades, relaxation and retail therapy, we shouldn”™t lose sight of the true meaning of Memorial Day ”“ commemorated today, Monday, May 29 ”“ to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.
Many of our communities display tribute banners dedicated to those who served. This year, Ardsley Engine Company # 1 and Ardsley American Legion Post 458 are sharing the costs of producing military tribute banners for 12 Ardsley residents who served and died in World War II.
Organizations like Wreaths Across America also ensure that none of our war dead throughout history are forgotten.
But we honor the dead by serving the living as well. On Memorial Day, it”™s also important to acknowledge the number of men and women who served our nation and are homeless across the country. According to the ”¯Department of Veterans Affairs, there are 107,000 homeless veterans on any given night.
”¯Choice of New York”¯ assists people in obtaining and maintaining housing.”¯Choice”™s Homeless Outreach Workers are professionals, many of whom have also experienced difficulties similar to clients in this program and have triumphed over them.”¯During the program, a homeless outreach worker remains by the client”™s side and develops a step-by-step plan for the client to reach the goal of obtaining safe, stable and permanent housing.”¯
However you choose to remember the day, Westfair wishes you a meaningful Memorial Day. And to our veterans and those still serving, we say thank you. We love you. And we will never forget you
