In honor of Black History Month, SHU Community Theatre is proud to present a special Black History Month Film Series, showcasing powerful, award-winning films that celebrate Black voices, history, and storytelling. The series, running throughout February, highlights the contributions of Black artists, activists, and visionaries whose work continues to shape culture and inspire change. The range of films consists of gripping dramas, documentaries, and provocative masterpieces including “Do The Right Thing,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Selma,” “Moonlight,” and “I Am Not Your Negro.” (see below for full schedule and dates).
Robert Johnson, director of the Sacred Heart University Multicultural Center states, “Black History Month is a time to reflect on the struggles, achievements, and resilience of Black communities throughout history. Through film and the arts, we can engage in meaningful conversations, foster empathy, and build stronger, more inclusive communities. The arts serve as a bridge, bringing people together across cultures and generations to celebrate shared stories and experiences.”
The lineup features five critically acclaimed films that explore themes of identity, justice, and perseverance:
Sat, February 15 | 7 PM – Judas and the Black Messiah This gripping historical drama tells the true story of Fred Hampton and the Black Panther Party.
Sun, February 23 | 7 PM – Moonlight Barry Jenkins’ Academy Award-winning coming-of-age masterpiece explores identity, love, and self-discovery.
Thu, February 27 | 7 PM – Selma Ava DuVernay’s powerful retelling of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s march for voting rights.
Fri, February 28 | 6:30 PM – I Am Not Your Negro This thought-provoking documentary, based on James Baldwin’s unfinished work, examines race in America.
Black History Month is a time for us all to reflect on the contributions, accomplishments, talents and strides the Black community has made in America. Starting out as ‘Negro History Week,’ Black History Month has evolved into a month-long celebration to commend Black Americans and their ancestors who have triumphed despite societal limitations. The Office for Inclusive Excellence’s Multicultural Center in partnership with the SHU Community Theater invite all community members to engage in the celebration and recognition of Black History Month with the selection of films we’ve chosen to commemorate Black history Month.
