BluePath’s 9th Annual Walkathon will be held on Saturday, May 10th, 2025, at FDR Park in Yorktown Heights, NY. 10:00am – 1:00pm. Walk begins promptly at 10:30, with the choice of a 1.7 mile or 3-mile loop. Participants receive a tee-shirt and access to all-day activities, including bounce houses, a bubble bus, games, food trucks, and more. This is an inclusive event – a quiet tent with comfortable seating, books, and fidget toys is available throughout. Register at www.bluepathservicedogs.org.
The local nonprofit BluePath Service Dogs provides autism service dogs that bring hope and independence to children and families.
One in every 36 children born today will develop an autism spectrum disorder (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). Wandering is a common and dangerous behavior in children with autism, and even the most routine outings can quickly become life-threatening. As a result, many families retreat into the safety of their homes, leading to social isolation.
BluePath service dogs provide safety in public by preventing children from bolting, whether into traffic or away from parents in crowded areas. They also offer companionship, increased social interaction, and opportunities for independence, boosting confidence in children.
Kyle and Mimi Freeman (Somers, NY) received BluePath Knight for their ten-year-old-son, Jacob.
“Jacob is fascinated by vehicles, and he forgets everything else, including safety and awareness,” said Kyle Freeman. “Last summer, I took Jacob to the Intrepid Museum, thinking it would be a relaxing trip. After parking just two blocks away, I quickly realized how easily a wandering incident could turn into something much worse. That is when I realized we needed some serious help.”
“Since BluePath service dog Knight entered our lives in September, museum visits are no longer terrifying,” Freeman continued. “A recent outing was a completely different experience – calm, safe, and genuinely enjoyable. Knight helped keep Jacob grounded throughout the museum and the planetarium show. We are so grateful to have her in our lives.”
Each BluePath dog comes with thousands of hours of training from dedicated volunteers and professional staff. The cost to prepare these remarkable dogs is upwards of $40,000, yet thanks to the ongoing generosity of supporters, BluePath service dogs – and intensive, ongoing follow up support – are provided free of charge.
“Stories like the Freeman’s highlight the crucial role BluePath service dogs play in enhancing safety and strengthening family dynamics,” said Michelle Brier, BluePath’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our dogs help build confidence and open doors to new experiences, allowing families to navigate the world with greater ease and connection.”
Since its launch in late 2016, BluePath has matched 55 service dogs with individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. Eligibility criteria for receiving a service dog, as well as information on volunteer and support opportunities, can be found at www.bluepathservicedogs.org.
