The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is allocating $750,000 for three projects in Westchester County designed to increase storm resiliency and upgrade recreational access to the Hudson River.
The funds for these projects will be taken from the 2010 settlement with General Motors LLC involving the company”™s release of contaminants from its Tarrytown assembly plant into the Hudson River.
The village of Sleepy Hollow will receive $375,000 for restoring and enhancing the riverside trail on the former GM site; Tarrytown will receive $271,000 to stabilize the shoreline of Losee Park while improving public access to the park”™s kayak and canoe launch; and Historic Hudson Valley will receive $104,000 for improving storm resiliency and river access at Philipsburg Manor, a historic landmark in Sleepy Hollow that is contiguous to the former GM site.
“The Hudson River is an exceptional resource that should be accessible for all New Yorkers to enjoy,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “The projects announced today will enhance work already underway to expand recreational opportunities throughout the estuary.”
