With temperatures across Connecticut projected to rise above 90 degrees and a heat index between 95 and 100, Governor Ned Lamont on Monday announced a three day implementation of the state’s extreme hot weather protocol.
“It’s been pretty warm over the last several days and it’s about to get warmer, particularly over the next several evenings,” Governor Lamont said. “Anyone who is vulnerable to heat and humidity is advised to take precautions. Cooling centers are open throughout Connecticut and can be located by calling 2-1-1 or visiting 211ct.org.”
Exacerbating the dangers of high temperatures is the high humidity. Highly humid air prevents sweat from evaporating effectively, both increasing discomfort and preventing the body from cooling itself. As a result, lower temperatures become dangerous than in low humidity conditions.
Children and infants are encouraged to increase their intake of liquids, while people 65 and older are also cautioned to take measures to handle the heat.
Residents across the state are encouraged to visit 211ct.org for more information, or contact their city or town about local cooling facilities.
