Vassar College is presenting its annual “Service of Lessons and Carols,” an Advent service of readings, choral anthems and congregational carols that culminates in a candle lighting ceremony, at the College Chapel on the Poughkeepsie campus this Sunday, Dec, 3, at 7:00 p.m.
The program will feature Advent and scriptural readings and an ensemble of 160 singers, including the Vassar College Chamber Singers, Vassar College Choir, the Capella Festiva Chamber Choir, and the Cor Capriccio Children’s Choir singing works by Vaughan Williams, Colin Britt, Ola Gjeilo, Rosephanye Powell, and others.
The event is free and open to the public, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. A free-will offering will be taken to support the College’s Community Works campaign, which provides funding to several Hudson Valley organizations.
“We encourage members of the local community and the College community to arrive early for this well-attended event, which marks the beginning of the Christian season of Advent,” said Rev. Samuel Speers, associate dean of Vassar’s Office of Religious and Spiritual Life and Contemplative Practices.
