The Connecticut Business & Industry Association has elected Charles W. Shivery, president and CEO of Northeast Utilities in Hartford, as the chairman of its board of directors and Samuel S. Bergami Jr., president and CEO of Alinabal Holdings Corp. in Milford, as vice chairman.
Shivery and Bergami will both serve a one-year term, succeeding Meredith Reuben, CEO of Eastern Bag & Paper Group in Milford, whose term ended Dec. 12.
“We are very pleased to have Chuck and Sam lead the CBIA board,” said John R. Rathgeber, CBIA president and CEO in a prepared statement. “They are both respected leaders in the business community, and we look forward to working with them on policies that will help make Connecticut a better place to live, work and do business.”
“CBIA is one of the most productive organizations I have ever worked with,” Bergami said. “The aggressive agenda established for 2008 will make for a busy year for Chuck and me, and the entire board. We are fortunate to have Chuck”™s leadership and dedication and I look forward to working with him on all of CBIA”™s initiatives.”
Before assuming his present position at Northeast Utilities, Shivery was president and CEO of NU Enterprises Inc., the holding company for Northeast Utilities”™ competitive subsidiaries. He joined NU in 2002, after retiring earlier that year as co-president of the Constellation Energy Group, the parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric where he had held various senior management positions. He joined BG&E in 1972, after serving four years in the U.S. Navy.

Bergami began his career at Alinabal in 1966 as a tool and die apprentice. He held many positions over the years, and in 1992 became president, CEO and co-owner of Alinabal Holdings Corp., parent company of Alinabal Inc. Prior to joining Alinabal, Bergami was a small-business owner. He founded two companies in Milford, Saber Electrical Supply and Milford Electrical Contractors.

Shivery is on the board of directors of the Connecticut Science Center, the Connecticut Children”™s Medical Center, Edison Electric Institute, the Electric Power Research Institute, Energy Insurance Mutual and the Association of Edison Illuminating Cos. and has served on the Connecticut Governor”™s Competitiveness Council. He earned a master”™s degree in business administration from the University of Baltimore, and bachelor of arts and bachelor of engineering science degrees from The Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife, Chris, live in Avon.
Bergami is a trustee of the Milford Bank, chairman of the board at the University of New Haven and a director and treasurer of Milford Hospital. He earned an executive M.B.A. from the University of New Haven. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary Ph.D. in business by the University of New Haven. Bergami and his wife, Lois, live in Milford.
