A public protest against United Illuminating’s plan to construct a 25-mile railroad transmission line between West Haven and Fairfield has been scheduled to occur at the Pequot Library in Southport on Sunday, Nov. 5, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
The protest is being organized by EmpoweringFairfield, a grassroots effort spearheaded by the
Sasco Creek Neighbors Environmental Trust Inc. The event will feature speeches by elected officials and community leaders, along with music, a food truck and t-shirts for the first 200 attendees.
“Should this project proceed as proposed, it will trigger profound and irrevocable consequences, affecting our local economy, environment, and overall quality of life,” said the event organizers in a statement. “Residents, organizations, and businesses in Southport, Fairfield, and Bridgeport will bear the brunt of this impact.”
An online petition to demand the halt of the utility’s plans has gained more than 1,100 signatures as of this morning.
