South Fork Wind completed the installation of 13 monopile foundations supporting the project’s offshore wind substation and 12 wind turbines.
The project, a collaboration between Ørsted and Eversource, is on track to become the first U.S. utility-scale offshore wind farm to be completed in federal waters when it begins full operations by the end of this year. The 130 MW, 12-turbine project is based 19 miles southeast of Rhode Island’s Block Island and 30 miles east of Montauk Point, with the goal of providing electricity to 70,000 Long Island homes.
Work is currently underway on connecting the wind farm’s export cable and array cables to the offshore substation and installing advanced foundation components such as platforms and anode cages. Later this summer and into the fall, South Fork Wind will begin installing the wind turbine generators ”“ the first turbine tower sections for South Fork Wind arrived last month and are being marshaled at State Pier at the Port of New London in Connecticut. The remaining tower sections ”“ as well as turbine blades and nacelles ”“ will be arriving in the coming weeks.
