Six New England governors, including Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, recently asked the region’s grid operator to add at least 1200 megawatts of clean energy to the grid.
A new alliance announced in December, the group of governors are on a mission to expand the region’s energy infrastructure and lower the price of electricity.
In a letter to ISO-New England, the governors made their first request of up to 3600 megawatts of clean energy added to the grid, as well as a funding mechanism to invest in natural gas pipelines.
Malloy said the letter was a “concrete step forward” in securing cleaner, cheaper and more reliable  power.
“The spikes in wholesale electricity prices we are seeing during cold snaps this winter underscore the urgent need for expanded electric transmission capability and natural gas pipeline capacity,” Malloy said in a statement. “These investments will more than pay for themselves over time through lower prices for electricity. No state can address these on its own. But working together as a region we will take action to bring down the cost of power for our families and businesses.”
