Dominion Resources Inc. reportedly powered down a reactor at its Millstone Nuclear Power Station in Waterford, now running it at 75 percent capacity to minimize any disruption should it suddenly go offline during Hurricane Sandy.
According to the Associated Press, Dominion officials say that is unlikely to occur, adding that Millstone is built to withstand a Category 3 hurricane, with Sandy approaching the Northeast Monday, Oct. 29 as a Category 1 storm.
Millstone”™s two reactors furnish half of Connecticut”™s power at normal operation, with utilities tapping other sources during outages for routine maintenance and other events. Millstone”™s second reactor is currently offline for refueling.
