Manhattanville College will soon receive 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources, the college announced last week.
The school announced a 25-year solar energy contract with partners Energy in the Bank, RBI Solar, Cenergy Power and General Energy Solutions. The project will supply 1.1 megawatts of clean electricity yearly from 3,600 solar panels. The Harrison Planning Board approved the project on April 26.
Installation will start this summer and take about four months to complete, the college said.
The announcement is part of the college’s effort to become carbon neutral by 2025, a goal it established in 2009 when the college signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.
“Manhattanville College is firmly on its way to achieving carbon neutrality by 2025. Solar power is a reliable renewable energy resource for the college to tap into,” said Manhattanville College President Jon Strauss in a statement. “The project realizes environmental benefits and is cost competitive with conventional energy sources, which are projected to increase over the next 25 years.”
