The public will have a chance to hear what Entergy has to say about whether Cortlandt’s Indian Point should be re-licensed.
The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will hold a hearing Oct. 15 at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown at 1 p.m. addressing 10 technical and environmental challenges to Entergy’s application.
Another hearing will be held Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. Governor Andrew Cuomo has expressed opposition to the re-licensing.
Though the public is invited, the meetings are not public hearings. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that courtroom decorum will be observed, signs and placards are prohibited and people wishing to attend will be screened. Only accredited media is allowed to photograph or record the hearing.
At the hearing, a three-member panel will hear testimony from expert witnesses and issue a ruling at a later date.
The panel has heard most of the evidence, so the hearing will be a forum where panelists will ask questions of the parties’ witnesses to clarify testimony and exhibits.
Entergy submitted its application for a 20-year extension on April 30, 2007. The operating licenses for Indian Point 2 and 3 expire on Sept. 28, 2013 and Dec. 12, 2015, respectively. The licenses will remain in effect until the NRC issues a final ruling.
