An IBM research center in Yorktown Heights is receiving a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop technology to sense methane levels in the air.
The grant, which was announced by the office of U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, will go to the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center as part of a partnership with Princeton University and Harvard University to develop a methane measurement system.
The technology would use ground-based sensors to collect data and allow for quick responses about emission detection.
Methane is a greenhouse gas that can leak into the air as a result of natural gas extraction from methods like hydraulic fracturing, which was banned in New York this year.
