Roughly 8,500 unionized Consolidated Edison employees have threatened to go on strike if a new contract is not agreed to before the current one expires June 30 at midnight.
Harry J. Farrell, president of Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America, said in a June 29 statement that Con Edison Chairman Kevin Burke is “playing a dangerous game of chicken with the public and has a disaster in the making if he forces a work disruption and the system goes down.”
Meteorologists are calling for temperatures in White Plains to be in the upper 80s and low 90s this weekend and into next week.
A Con Edison spokesman told The Associated Press that the utility looks forward to “productive discussions with the union leadership on a new contract that”™s fair and equitable for our employees and customers.”
According to the AP, Local 1-2 members in May voted to authorize a strike if it became necessary.
