As it seeks to infuse its ranks with younger workers, Connecticut Light & Power Co. (CL&P) announced it will team with three community colleges to offer an associate degree program in Electric Power Technology as well as internship and other training opportunities.
Courses will be offered through the program at Northwestern Connecticut Community College in Winsted, Middlesex Community College in Middletown, and Manchester Community College. Additionally, CL&P will work with Bismarck State College in North Dakota to offer online courses.
Hands-on training and field internships will also be offered by CL&P, which is based in Berlin and is a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities.
CL&P said more than half of its existing utility workers are moving toward retirement, noting that years of training are required to become a line worker.
“With unemployment numbers what they are, this is a great opportunity for students to get a head-start on their career path while at the same time helping to fill a critical demand for skilled utility workers,” said Bill Herdegen, president of CL&P, in a statement.
