The University of Connecticut is expanding its presence in Waterbury by leasing space in a historic building adjacent to its campus in the city.
The school will lease approximately 26,300 square feet of space for academic, research, and administrative purposes in the six-story downtown building at 36 N. Main St. The building was constructed in 1895 as the local outlet for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization. A clothing store, meeting rooms and social spaces were part of the original structure, which became the Grieve, Bissett & Holland department store from 1902 through the mid-1960s.
The property has been unused for more than 15 years and an 18-month renovation will be required before UConn can begin its lease, which is slated for 2025. UConn and the Waterbury city government will finance the renovation work.
“The new space will be equipped with the latest teaching and research infrastructure, and offer a great home for UConn Waterbury to expand and strengthen these programs and many initiatives that are underway,” said Fumiko Hoeft, campus director. “We also pride ourselves on having great community relationships, and this space will be ideal for advancing such partnerships. Together, I am confident that UConn Waterbury students, graduates and our partners will contribute to enhancing the regional and state”™s workforce and economy. The many opportunities this provides are tremendous.”
