The Town of Fairfield will host its first-ever event to commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth on June 19, 2024. The event will take place at the Town Hall Green and Burr Mansion Tent.
Juneteenth marks the day that the last enslaved people in the United States were finally freed when enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was finally enforced in Texas, two years after it was signed into law  by Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. It became a federal holiday in 2021, the first new holiday since Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. day was launched in 1983.
The Fairfield celebration will begin at 11:30am and run until 2:30pm. The Blind Rhino food truck will be on site for the celebration.
Additionally an educational presentation from Maurice Nelson the chief diversity and inclusion officer at Sacred Heart University will mark the occasion, followed by a proclamation from Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber. The George Lesiw Trio, a unique act that fuses jazz, rock and blues.
