The board of regents of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system approved a 5% increase for at the state’s regional universities and community colleges.
The tuition increase goes into effect in the Fall 2024 semester. CSCU has been struggling financially and is facing a $140 million shortfall in its operational budget. The higher tuition would add $305 per semester for students at the regional universities and $123 for the community college students.
The increase comes despite opposition for students and the leadership of the schools within the system.
“We are acutely aware that a 5% increase will add burden to our students directly and our students’ ability to pay and their ability to balance work, life and family obligations,” said Chancellor Terrence Cheng at the board meeting. “We will continue to lobby state leaders intently and consistently for the funding we need to address the system shortfall and hopefully mitigate any tuition fee.”
