Jobs numbers up, down
Though New York state as a whole experienced a greater increase in private- sector jobs than originally estimated, there was more of a pronounced decline in Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.
Between December 2009 and December 2010, annual private-sector jobs in the state grew by 11,500 or 0.2 percent, to 7,043, 400.
Private-sector jobs increased by 6,600 from December 2010, or 0.1 percent, to 7,079,800 this January.
“Our revised data show that New York lost fewer jobs in the recession than we first estimated,” said Rod Fortran, bureau chief for Labor Market Information, Division of Research and Statistics, in the latest New York State Department of Labor jobs report. “We also added more jobs during the current recovery than earlier calculated. Our state”™s economy outperformed the nation with stronger job growth and a lower unemployment rate in 2010.”
Last year, job growth was centered in New York City, with suburban downstate counties and 52 upstate counties experiencing the greatest drops.
Private-sector growth was greatest in Ithaca, up 1.3 percent; New York City, up 0.8 percent and Glens Falls, 0.5 percent.
On the flip side, there was a drop in employment in Binghamton, down 2.2 percent; Albany-Schenectady-Troy, down 1 percent; Putnam-Rockland-Westchester, down 0.6 percent and Utica-Rome, down 0.6 percent.
Educational and health services added the most private-sector jobs, up 29,800, of any sector over the past year.
Job gains in the sector were greatest in health care and social assistance, up 19,000. Ambulatory health care services climbed by 11,400.
Professional and business services were up by 27,600, marking the second largest increase in jobs since January. Sector job gains were greatest in administrative and support services, up 14,700.
The third-largest increase in jobs occurred in leisure and hospitality, up 14,700. Accommodations and food services grew the most within that sector, up 12,600.
Over-the-year employment gains in trade, transportation and utilities, up 12,300, were centered in the wholesale and retail trade, up 13,200 positions.
Job losses primarily occurred in government, down 30,500; construction, down 14,200 and manufacturing, down 7,700.
