The A&P store at 1233 Nepperhan Ave. in Yonkers -which is scheduled to close this week- will be converted into a CVS Pharmacy and Key Food grocery store, a dual use opposed by Yonkers City Council President Liam J. McLaughlin.
In a recent newsletter to residents, the Republican council leader expressed concern with the plans to split the store between Staten Island-based Key Food Stores Co-operative Inc. and the pharmacy chain. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert D. Drain approved the sale of the store’s lease to CVS earlier this month under the condition that it will also offer groceries.
“We are not happy with a split and feel a full service supermarket solution would better serve the residents of northwest Yonkers,” McLaughlin said. ‘We are doing everything in our power to ensure the residents of the city are properly served.”
McLaughlin said he and City Council Majority Leader John Larkin will meet with officials from CVS and Key Food this week to discuss the plans and finalize details for the property, which is located across the street from a 24-hour Walgreens store.
A&P’s parent company, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July and announced it would close its 25 Westchester A&P and Pathmark supermarket locations by Nov. 26.
