At noon Wednesday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is slated to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation and modernization of the pavilion at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.
The pavilion was built in 1961 and was last renovated 25 years ago. Its remake is being funded by $3.5 million in state bonding.
As of Wednesday morning, there was a 50 percent chance of rain, with no alternative plans cited in the event of cancellation.
The 235-acre Sherwood Island park ”“ named for a colonial English miller ”“ is 100 years old this year. It was Connecticut”™s first state park and remains one of its most popular, according to the governor”™s office. It features the Sherwood Island Nature Center, which for the last three years has been open in the summer.
The nature center is a cooperative effort of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Friends of Sherwood Island.
