A Pennsylvania company unveiled its plans for an $800 million casino in Springfield, Mass., with the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority hoping to build a resort just south of Worcester.
Massachusetts has authorized construction of three casinos, including one for the western part of the state, likely siphoning patrons from the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos in eastern Connecticut.
Mohegan Sun owns land in Palmer, Mass. with the goal of constructing a casino there.
Penn National Gaming Inc. submitted its proposal to Springfield officials to build a “Hollywood-branded destination casino resort” in its words, at a cost of $807 million. Located off Interstate 95 north of Springfield, the casino would include at least 3,000 slot machines, a hotel, meeting space, and at least 4,000 parking spaces.
Connecticut is currently planning a high-speed rail line that would snake north from New Haven through Hartford to Springfield.
Penn National operates the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course outside Harrisburg, Pa.
