The managing partners of Metro Plaza WP L.L.C. joined  White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach recently in a downtown ceremony marking the start of demolition work at the former A&P Supermarket at 250 Main St., where construction will begin on the $7 million Metropolitan Plaza retail development.
The long-vacant supermarket will be replaced with a two-story, glass-facade retail building with 15,000 square feet of space on the first floor and approximately 20,000 square feet on the second floor, the first phase of a mixed-use project planned by William Meyer and partner Anthony “A.J.” Rotonde, chief operating officer of the Metro Plaza company.
The retail development is expected to be completed by late summer in 2012.
The developer already has renovated store facades on existing retail space on the Main Street block that adjoins City Center. Planet Fitness and Chipotle Grill are the most recent additions to a row of tenants that include AnthonyӪs Coal Fired Pizza, Pearl Frozen Yogurt, Doggies and Puppies, Wines and Spirits and Metro Caf̩.
The developer expects to receive city approvals this summer for the project”™s second phase, a 130-room business-suite hotel that will connect to the retail component of Metropolitan Plaza. The estimated $15-million project is expected to be completed by fall of 2012.
