United Technologies Corp. subsidiary Pratt & Whitney has laid off 80 hourly workers and eliminated 20 positions through buyouts, according to a report by the Harford Courant.
A company spokesman told the Courant the cuts were the result of the completion of the F119 engine program coupled with lower global demand for commercial engine overhaul and repair work. The cuts were not directly related to U.S. Department of Defense spending cuts, the spokesman said.
The F-22 fighter jet uses Pratt & Whitney-built F119 engines. According to the Courant, the final F119 engine for the F-22 fighter is expected to be completed early in 2013.
The Courant reported that the layoffs occurred at the aircraft engine manufacturer’s East Hartford location, while the buyouts were split between its East Hartford and Middletown facilities.
