Sikorsky Aircraft used to have an outpost at Stewart International Airport when National Express held the lease. Not many took advantage of the helicopter service, so Sikorsky moved its operations to Dutchess County Airport.
Now that Stewart has been taken over by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Zip Aviation will be picking up where Sikorsky left off.
The charter helicopter service started its on-demand service to midtown Manhattan on June 4. For $350, you can get from New Windsor to the heart of Manhattan in 20 minutes. While it might be pricey for the small business community, it”™s a welcome addition for Stewart, which hopes to lure big business to the airport as it grows, becoming a hub for national and international distribution.
“There”™s no denying air service is taking a hit right now, especially with the cost of fuel,” said Diannae Ehler, Stewart”™s general manager, at a recent breakfast in Orange County. “We”™re all feeling the pinch. But the Port Authority didn”™t buy Stewart with short-term goals. Eventually, it will be the strong regional airport we envision it to be.”
