Nyack head shop Liquid Shop, also known as Liquid Glass Shop, was named in a recent lawsuit by Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman for allegedly selling synthetic “designer drugs”
Schneiderman said Liquid Shop owner Andrew Grogan allegedly sold hallucinogenic and psychotropic drugs and street drug alternatives. Investigators from Schneiderman’s office made purchases from Liquid Shop between April and September, prompted by a complaint from a Suffern resident whose son collapsed and was hospitalized after inhaling a product purchased from the store at 66 S. Broadway in Nyack.
The investigation found e-liquids and candies were being sold under names like “Green Giant” and “Psycho.” Designer drugs have similar effects as street drugs, but include additional chemicals that have caused psychosis, acute arrhythmia, asphyxiation and death.
“The proliferation of illegal designer drugs is a national health crisis that is hurting New York families and communities,” Schneiderman said. “There is one set of rules for everyone, and if your trade is selling dangerous, mislabeled drugs anywhere in New York State, you must stop ”” or we will stop you.”
Also named in the suit is Erie County-based Surrealistic Sensations.
Schneiderman’s office began an initiative in 2012 to combat the sale of designer drugs that has led to dozens of lawsuits against head shops around the state. As a result, judges have issued permanent injunctions barring 22 stores from selling the products that were not properly labeled, a violation of state and federal laws.
The investigation was conducted by Chad Shelmidine, Peter Schottenfeld and Supervising Investigator Jonathan Woods.
