New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman released a list today of the top 10 consumer fraud complaints his office received in 2012.
Rounding out the list in order are: automobile, consumer-related service, landlord/tenant, mortgage, home repair/construction, retail sales, mail order and telecommunications.
Last year, there were 4,096 Internet-related complaints which topped the list. Credit-related complaints reached 3,200 involving debt collection, credit card billing and identity theft. Of all the credit-related complaints, 1,760 of them were filed against debt collectors who illegally threatened and harassed consumers.
“In these challenging economic times, it is more important than ever to protect consumers from the deceptive practices of unscrupulous corporations that try to lie, cheat and steal from hard working New Yorkers,” said Schneiderman. “My office will continue to send a message to businesses that consumers have rights and – if those rights are violated – we will come after you. It is important for consumers to not only know their rights, but how to fight back. In addition to taking action against those who cheat New Yorkers, this office is an excellent resource that can help stop scams before they start.”
The Attorney General”™s office supplemented the list of complaints with some tips that promote consumer protection including: use the Internet with secure website addresses that start with “https,” get to know the state”™s auto-leasing law, and regarding consumer-related service, make sure to secure a written contract for any service.
